Jesus Is …
The King of Kings
Lorena Valle

On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

Revelation 19:16 (ESV)

There are few things as captivating as watching the coronation of a new king on TV. The lavish carriage accompanied by soldiers riding beautiful horses; large crowds trying to catch a glimpse of the future king on his way to begin his reign; long robes filled with colors and jewelry that looks like it weighs a thousand pounds. We’re all captivated by the show of strength and majesty displayed.

Meanwhile, real life isn’t always so glamorous. As I sit to write this devotional, my husband and I have just received some difficult medical news. It’s in moments like this when I realize how little power and control I have over what is to come. I wish I could travel to the future and see if the decisions I’m currently making are wise and the best for my family.

Growing up, I loved watching the movie Back to the Future. We all wanted to know what the future held! We were intrigued to see if cars would fly and if hoverboards were going to be part of our Christmas lists in 20 years. Well, we’re all disappointed that cars don’t fly—especially when we hit traffic on the way to work. And even though hoverboards do exist now, they sure aren’t the revolutionary transportation we imagined! And while we may no longer hope for flying cars or hovercrafts in our future, we still have a desire to see what the future will be.

In the book of Revelation, John gives us a look into the future and what heaven looks like this very moment. Through his vision, we can see not only what is to come but also Jesus’ reign right now. He is sitting on His throne, in control and with dominion over every situation. This is the same Jesus who calls us “friend” and gave His life for you and me—the ultimate sacrifice so we may know God intimately.

It’s on days like today, in the face of hard news, that I remind myself Jesus is in control of my future, and “in this world [we] will have trouble. But take heart! [Jesus has] overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV). I must choose to remember that the King of kings longs to be close to you and me. Even when hardship comes our way, we can rely on the King of kings and Lord of lords, trusting that He reigns over all our circumstances.

If you’re facing trouble or uncertainty this Advent season, I want to encourage you with this passage: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1 NIV). He is our refuge where we can find comfort and a place to be known. We may lack the strength to push forward but He doesn’t. You, my friend, have relationship with the King of kings and Lord of lords, and He is in control of it all—that’s good news for you and me this Christmas!
