As we anticipate the arrival of Christmas, the Advent season creates a space for us to experience all the beautiful things that encompass our Savior, Jesus Christ. Each day of Advent is an invitation that the Father extends to us to receive the best gift of the Christmas season—the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). The new life we receive when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior is a gift that comes directly from Jesus Christ.
One of the keys to spiritual intimacy with Jesus is understanding that our head knowledge must make the journey down to settle in our hearts. This opens the door for our hearts to resonate with who Jesus truly is and allows the expression of that revelation to appear in every area of our lives. As we encounter difficult circumstances, we can have hope and we can overcome them if we choose to follow the path that Jesus so beautifully sets before us in John 14:6: He is the way, He is the truth, and He is the life.
Jesus as “the way” is an invitation from God for us to follow and trust that Jesus is who He says He is. Following the “way of Jesus” leads us on a path of life, and as John 10:10 says, life more abundantly.
Jesus as “the truth” creates a safe space for us to lean in with our trust and take Jesus’ words to our hearts. We can believe His words are truth and learn how His life and words shape our world. His truth builds a culture of faith where we can rest in the hope of God for our lives.
Jesus as “the life” is an expression of His life (or zoe) that infuses us with love, joy, power, and peace when we accept Him as Lord and Savior. The Greek word zoe means “life” or “living,” and in Scripture it’s used to describe the fullness of life that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ. The zoe life with Christ invites us to partner with Jesus; exchange anything in our thoughts that is not life-giving; and allow His love, power, and peace to become genuine in us.
This Advent season let’s reflect on the gift of Jesus, Himself. He is our way, our truth, and our life. When we focus on these things, we will begin to experience a life that is active, vigorous, and wholly devoted to God.
